Book Club Review – The Secret Lives of Dresses {Erin McKean}

A few months ago, my friend, Rosanne and I, started a book club. Inspired by my grandmother who has been part of a book club for many years, we decided to jump on the bandwagon and start our own.  Our book club is made up mostly of members that seem to disappear each time we try to have a meeting. At this point, we are still trying to figure out who is actually in the book club.

Today’s meeting was a quiet one, with a storm brewing outside. But armed with coffee and banana chocolate chip muffins, we delved into the wonderful world of our latest book – “The Secret Lives of Dresses” by Erin McKean.

Everyone seemed to really enjoy this book. It wasn’t too heavy going but it still had some substance with enough action to keep you turning the pages to find out what happens next.

“It was such a good story about growing up, making choices, finding yourself and standing up for your values,” says Suyi.

This book had some great characters who made the story of Dora and her grandmother, Mimi, all the more lively. Handsome hunk, Con, was a hit. Hannah want’s to marry him. He was Rosanne’s favorite character too. (Guys if you want some tips – read the book!) Maux was Suyi’s favorite character. “She sounds like a great friend…crazy but reliable and there for you when you really need her.”

During our discussion, we decided that the book could have had more secret lives revealed and overall it was hard to understand how they all fitted into the whole story.  However, we have proposed that we should try and write some ‘secret lives’ for our favorite dresses. It will be interesting to see how they turn out.

It has been suggested that from now on we shall dress up beautifully for book club – just like Mimi would. Bring on the next book – “The Memory Keeper’s Daughter” by Kim Edwards.

Book Club Rating: 8/10

  1. Oooh I’ve always wanted to be in a REAL live Book club! Mrs Readalot is Jealous right now! She will have to make do with her bloggy bookclub which is not to be sneezed at; I like the idea of writing a post about the secret life of one of your dresses… now THAT would be fun 🙂

  2. I finally got my copy of this book from the library and I’m so excited to read it.

    You’ll love The Memory Keeper’s Daughter. It’s a very powerful book. Which reminds me, it must be time to read it again.

    • I’ve actually read Memory Keeper’s Daughter too but the other girls haven’t. I really enjoyed it and there’s of great book club discussion material in it! Looking forward to reading it again.
